Nomonhan

Project Overview

Nomonhan is a 1000×1000 meter open-terrain map for World of Tanks: Mercenaries, inspired by the 1939 Battle of Khalkhin Gol on the Mongolian-Manchurian frontier. The map features expansive semi-arid steppe broken by rocky outcrops and dry riverbeds, favoring long-range engagements and mobile tank tactics over cover-based combat.

Role

As Senior Environment Artist on Nomonhan, I contributed to look development, lighting, optimization, map loading screen and minimap design, terrain sculpting, foliage placement, and set dressing across the map. My work focused on capturing the wide-open character of the Central Asian steppe while maintaining the gameplay readability and performance targets required for competitive multiplayer at scale.

Key Contributions

  • Owned cross-play environment visual development on Nomonhan for World of Tanks: Mercenaries — from initial block-out through shipped map
  • Led conversion of World of Tanks PC maps to Xbox 360 and Xbox HD-capable console builds, adapting fidelity and asset budgets to each hardware target
  • Produced environment assets, foliage, terrain, animations, lighting, and UI for the map end-to-end
  • Managed environment deliverables against release milestones for the World of Tanks: Mercenaries live service
  • Optimized environments to fit the memory footprint of current-and-last-gen consoles via level streaming and per-hardware asset allocation
