John Carmack Live Q&A — Horizon Beta

Project Overview

A live, developer-facing Q&A with Meta Consulting CTO John Carmack, staged inside a purpose-built Meta Horizon Worlds environment for Facebook Connect 2021. One of the earliest public productions built in the Horizon Worlds beta tooling — a proof-of-concept for what live in-VR events could look like on the platform, and a stress-test of the creator toolset while it was still being written.

Role & Responsibilities

Lead artist and environment builder for the developer-session experience. Designed and built both the main stage and the audience lobby, handling art direction, lighting, atmosphere, 3D modeling, and the setup of interactive scripting that drove the host, Carmack's presenter role, and audience seating.

Beyond the build, worked directly with engineering as an early tester and feedback partner on newer Horizon Worlds creation tools — surfacing gaps, requesting fixes, and helping shape features that would later ship to third-party creators. Walked John Carmack, Meta stakeholders, and leadership through the environment for demos and approvals, and captured progress through screen recordings and stills for internal reviews.

Key Contributions

  • Designed and built the main stage and audience lobby end-to-end — layout, lighting, atmosphere, materials, and set dressing
  • 3D modeled the environment's set pieces and staging elements inside Horizon Worlds' early creation tooling
  • Set up scripting for the host role, Carmack's presenter role, and audience seating / participation
  • Partnered with engineering as an early tester of the Horizon Worlds toolset — surfaced tooling gaps and shaped fixes that made it into the platform
  • Guided John Carmack and Meta leadership through the space for demos and approval sign-off ahead of the live event
  • Documented iteration via screen captures and video for leadership and cross-team reviews
